Changes in Conflict Resolution

This interactive session of DASICON 2019 will feature an informal chat with expert Professor Brigitte Holzner. We will discuss conflict resolution in modern times and the ways it has been impacted by “new wars” and the increasing influence of non-state actors within global geopolitics. The conversation will touch on the concept of Global Citizenship, evaluating whether it might replace or strengthen the “Responsibility to Protect”. Additionally, the breakout session will delve into Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, to talk about how a greater inclusion of women has changed peace-building.
Brigitte Holzner is currently a professor at University of Graz. She holds a Ph.D. in Psychology and an M.A. in Development Studies with the specialization in Women & Development. In the past she has worked extensively as a researcher, advisor, consultant and trainer for the Austrian Development Agency, the EU Rule of Law Mission EULAX in Kosovo and the Gender Network of the Development Assistance Committee at the OECD among others. She was Chair of the international network WIDE (Women in Development Europe) for several years and currently chairs TAMAR, a counselling centre for victims of sexual violence in Vienna. Since January 2017 she is Secretary of the Austrian-Indonesian Society.

Netzwerktreffen: Frauen in der Außenpolitik

Zum Teil sind die Bereiche Europa-, Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik immer noch stark männlich geprägt. Das betrifft nicht nur den geringeren Frauenanteil in diesem Feld, sondern auch inhaltliche Aspekte der Politik. In den letzten Jahren wurden jedoch von verschiedener Seite aus immer häufiger auch europa-, außen- oder sicherheitspolitische Themen aus einer Gender-Perspektive beleuchtet. Schweden gab kürzlich ein Handbuch feministischer Außenpolitik heraus. Und beginnend mit der UN-Resolution 1325 wird auch in den Vereinten Nationen sowie in anderen internationalen Organisationen der Zusammenhang zwischen Gender, Peace und Security vermehrt thematisiert.

Dabei werden wir gemeinsam mit Martina Schöggl vom branchenübergreifenden Frauennetzwerk The Sorority und Jessica Grün von Women in International Security Austria (WIIS) diskutieren, ob bzw. wieso es spezifische Frauennetzwerke braucht, warum mehr Frauen* in der Europa-, Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik tätig sein sollten und welche Auswirkungen das auf die Politik haben könnte.
