Who we are

Our Mission

Women In International Security (WIIS – pronounced ‘wise’) Austria is an independent, non-partisan, non-for-profit organisation headquartered in Vienna. It´s mission is to create an international platform for women and men to work side-by-side towards equitable peace and security by hosting policy debates, creating a network of young professionals in Vienna, giving a voice to female security experts and offering a mentoring programme for young women.

Our Approach

WIIS Austria is dedicated to contributing to the inclusive and multidimensional participation of women in fields related to international security including but not limited to peace, conflict resolution, economic development, humanitarian affairs, and human rights. This is done through collaborative research, policy analysis and recommendations, information exchange, professional development and training, networking and new initiatives.

Key Projects and Activities

1. Networking Events

We organize regular networking events, seminars, and workshops to connect professionals, academics, and students interested in international security. These events provide opportunities for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and mentorship.

2. Research and Publications

WIIS Austria supports research initiatives focused on gender and security issues. We encourage members to contribute to our publications and engage in discussions on topics such as peacekeeping, conflict resolution, and gender mainstreaming in security policies.

3. Training and Capacity Building

We offer training programs and skill-building workshops to empower women in the security sector. From leadership development to negotiation skills, our training initiatives aim to equip women with the tools they need to succeed in their careers.

4. Advocacy and Outreach

WIIS Austria advocates for gender-sensitive policies and practices within the security sector. We engage with policymakers, international organizations, and civil society to promote gender mainstreaming and ensure that women's voices are heard in decision-making processes.

An International Network

Women In International Security (WIIS) was founded in 1987 in Washington, D.C. It is the world’s leading organization dedicated to promoting and connecting women in international security policy. WIIS now boasts approximately 7,000 members globally, with chapters in ten locations in the USA and a presence in a total of 27 countries.
